IT'S ALL OVER. WHAT HAVE WE LEARNT?

So it’s finally come to an end, our search for answers. It’s been a wild ride.

The quest for knowledge is a never-ending one. Pretty much like life-insurance, actually. You know you need it, but you’re just not sure when exactly you’ll need it. You might not know when you next have to scale an electric fence or be invited out for a hot curry, but at least you know what choice to make when you do – we’re hoping the site has taught you that at the very least. Like with insurance, it’s great to know you’re covered when life throws a little curve ball your way. Armed with knowledge, your trip through life just got that much easier.

It’s been an interesting journey serving as your guinea pig, as together with the Smartaboutwhat team we’ve navigated a series of investigations and situations to bring you closer the smart decision in your real-life scenarios. My top tip? Always bring some spare underpants, you can never have enough clean undies.

It’s also been mildly traumatic. I’ve been electrocuted, body slammed, waxed clean and been subjected to the searing pain of Cape Town’s hottest meal -  going in and out.

Most of these fun experiments were aided and abetted by reader’s suggestions to the website. Thankfully, I didn’t have to take you up all the schemes you dreamed up (See the worst questions in the blog section), and despite my whining, all of the experiments we did were hugely fun and well worth any risk to my life. We did learn that leaving these suggestions to Internet users meant that most of you were looking to find a way to harm me in one way or another, but in the end it was part of the deal and I wouldn’t change it if I could. That’s a lie, I’d have changed a lot, but I signed a contract, so I couldn’t do much about it.

Furthermore, I was secure in knowing that if there were to be some unfortunate mishaps I was completely covered by the generous folk at Sanlam, who sponsored my full disability and life insurance. Having their cover gave me the peace of mind to really let loose and go for all those insane tasks you threw my way. Not many young people have themselves insured, which in many ways is strange, because while you might not need to cover your possessions just yet, your ability to earn an income is your greatest asset [PS2] and considering that your younger years are when you really go at things the hardest, it’s probably when you need it the most. Unless your Keith Richards or Charlie Sheen who only seem to get wilder as they age.

So whether you’re a rock star or an accountant, knowing that you’re safe in case anything happens (and as we all know, things usually do) really takes a weight off your shoulders. It allows you to live your life to the fullest and, if you are as ‘out there’ as me, have a crack at a few things that scare you just a little.

As our grandprize winner Tessa said, ‘I never really knew about life insurance or disability cover as something a young person would consider before Smartaboutwhat – it’s fantastic that Sanlam’s sponsored this project, and it shows they’re a relevant product to me. I certainly have become more aware of my insurance options. I’ll be sure to Google them on my iPad!’

For now, the Smartaboutwhat journey has reached a conclusion. We trust you’ve enjoyed the past few months as much as we have, and look forward to seeing you in the future. If you are only stumbling upon the site now, sorry you missed us, but feel free to browse the site and find out some of the answers to our questions – we had a lot of fun finding them for you.
